On one of the Facebook groups I am part of, we share stories about our Uber experiences. Sometimes funny, sometimes creepy, and sometimes just wrong. This is one of those ‘just wrong’ stories that need to change asap…
I just got a pool request. The person is not there so I called. Woman answers and tells me to go to the building number then go upstairs and its door #6 and hit the buzzer. I explained to her we don’t do that. Her answer, but my son is only 12 and can’t carry the baby and stroller alone
Now, the driver who posted this story did not pick up the kid. However, I am pretty confident that the lady would keep trying new Uber drivers until someone did, and I really believe someone eventually did. This got me thinking back to a story that played on my local news….
The story focuses on some extreme journalism where the reporter, Jacqui Heinrich, ran a small sting operation to catch drivers picking up a 17-year-old girl when the legal age to ride is 18. I know, hard hitting stuff here. She traps these drivers by having the girl request not one but four rides and every time the girl (who could easily pass for 18) was picked up without incident. Then, she approaches the drivers like she’s Chris Hansen and gives them serious questions on if they knew she was underage.
I’m not saying that Uber drivers shouldn’t follow the rules. It is indeed a rule to not allow passengers under the age of 18 without someone of legal age with them. I believe there are insurance issues and it’s just generally safer for both the driver and rider to avoid all that. Uber indeed needs to make it more clear that there is an age limit, but they also need to make it clear there are car seat laws!
That brings me back to my main point. Instead of running sting operations on drivers picking up 17-year-old kids, they really need to start exposing the drivers who would pick up not only a 12-year-old but a baby without a car seat along with it! That is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed right away.
